¿Qué tan cierto es eso de que estando en el medio es que se aprende otro idioma?

Talvez tú mismo hayas dicho alguna vez, “Estando en el medio es que uno aprende a hablar un idioma”. Eso es cierto, pero hay algo que muy pocos saben. Voy a contártelo con algo que sucedió hoy. Esta tarde Patty, una admirable joven de Estanzuelas, El Salvador, a quien hemos llamado mi última estudiante presencial (mientras acabo de poner el curso online), antes de iniciar su clase de séptimo nivel del método Solid English, estaba viendo con mis hijas un video de los VeggieTales. Yo, desde otro cuarto escuché a Larry y Bob hablando y uno de ellos dijo, “Your second cousin?” (¿Tu primo en segundo grado?) y el otro dijo, “Twice removed” ((Separado por dos generaciones)). Desde donde yo estaba grité, “Patty, escuchaste eso?” y ella me dijo, “Precisamente eso te iba a decir, que les había entendido eso.” Lo curioso de todo esto es que ella lo escuchó precisamente dos días después de haberlo aprendido. Qué coincidencia, ¿cierto?Francamente, yo no creo que sea así. Aunque yo mismo haya dicho que cuando uno acaba de aprender una palabra nueva, siempre empieza a escucharla por todo lado, creo que en realidad lo que sucede es que al aprender una nueva palabra, nuestros sentidos se preparan para percibirla y en realidad captan lo que ya “saben”. Los del cognitivismo dicen que uno ha creado las bases para poder relacionar conocimiento nuevo a ellas. En lo que nos atañe aquí, cuando nosotros aprendemos algo conscientemente es cuando estamos mejor preparados para aprovechar el inglés que hay alrededor de nosotros.
Lo que eso significa es que si no hacemos un esfuerzo consciente por aprender, por mucho que estemos rodeados de estímulos en el idioma, poco será lo que aprovechemos de todo lo que escuchemos o veamos casualmente. Sí es cierto que estando en el medio uno aprende más rápido, pero también conozco a muchas personas que han vivido en Estados Unidos hasta por más de 30 años y nunca han logrado en realidad desenvolverse con confianza en inglés.
Te preguntarás que esto qué tiene que ver contigo. Lo que estás haciendo tú en este preciso momento es lo que te va a ayudar a alcanzar más rápido tus metas de comunicación en inglés. Tu interés y esfuerzo consciente por aprender será lo que catalizará los estímulos que día a día, vivas donde vivas, recibes y que constantemente te ayudarán a afianzar y entender más el inglés.

Muy bien dicho, también he sido testigo de muchas personas que ni teniéndolo que escuchar a diario, no aprenden a manejar el idioma como deberían. Definitivamente lo que uno hace a conciencia y con esfuerzo es lo que verdaderamente le garantiza el exito. Estoy muy emocionado con su curso de pronunciación y estoy convenciéndome lección a lección de que este es el mejor curso de pronunciación que hay en el momento. Gracias profe! Excelente trabajo!
