Thanksgiving Day–Día de Acción de Gracias
Filed under InglésNov 26Este es talvez uno de los mayores aportes de la cultura de los Estados Unidos al mundo. No sólo en EU sino en varios países hoy se celebra el Día de Acción de Gracias. Sin poder resistirme mucho a mi ánimo de profesor de inglés para centrarme luego en mi papel de maestro, quisiera decirte de paso que Thanksgiving Day se compone de dos elementos principales: Day signfica Día y esa palabra tiene una característica o adjetivo que es Thanksgiving. Este término tiene la forma del gerundio de Give que significa Dar, Regalar, Entregar. Como un gerundio es un sustantivo, podríamos traducir Giving como Regalar, Regalo, Entregar, Entrega o Dar, “Dación”
si existiera esa forma en español. En esa expresión lo que se está entregando es Thanks, Gracias, y por eso podríamos decir que Thanksgiving Day podría traducirse como Día de entrega de gracias”, o “Día de dar gracias”.Este día se ha vuelto muy especial en mi familia desde que llegué por primera vez a los Estados Unidos en 1997. Para mí comenzó con la adopción de una tradición del país que me recibió como su huesped y de la que participé siguiendo lo que muestra el dicho que me enseñó mi amigo Michael Cruz en Tucson, Arizonza: “When in Rome, do what the Romans do” (Cuando en Roma, haz lo que los romanos hacen), que equivale en español a “A donde fueres, haz lo que vieres”. Pero poco a poco comencé a apropiarme del inmenso significado que mis amigos le dan a esta fecha, y ahora en mi familia la tomamos como una oportunidad para celebrar todo aquello por lo que estamos agradecidos.
Mi amiga Linda Vaitsas en Greensboro, North Carolina, después de la cena de Thanksgiving, siempre pide a quienes están sentados a su mesa que expresen por qué quisieran dar gracias cada año. En un momento quisiera invitarte a pausar por un momento y pensar por qué das gracias hoy también. Por mi parte, le doy gracias a Dios por haberme guiado a conocerlo, por haberme dado una maravillosa familia, una esposa que es el amor de mi vida, mi compañera y ayuda idonea, un par de princesas que son la alegría de mi vida, y por rodearme de personas que muestran su amor, y Su amor, de muchas maneras, especialmente cuando más necesito de ánimo para seguir adelante. Agradezco también por quienes trabajan y han trabajado conmigo en el Programa Solid English y también por mis estudiantes en todo el mundo, por quienes me levanto cada día con los deseos de dar lo mejor de mí y poder crear el mejor curso de inglés en Internet. Muchas gracias a ti por leer esta nota hoy conmigo.
Ahora es tu turno. Piensa por favor, por un momento, en las cosas que tienes en tu vida que te motivan a dar gracias hoy. La oportunidad de vivir, tu familia, tus amigos, tus sentidos, tus sueños, tus recuerdos felices, las enseñanzas de experiencias pasadas, en fin, tú lo sabes mejor que yo. Al hacer este ejercicio vas a comprender que cuando centramos nuestra atención en lo bueno de nuestra vida, nos olvidamos de las cosas negativas y lo que nos lastima. Y esto nos lleva a concluir que si nos esforzamos por vivir en una actitud de gratitud constante, los pensamientos negativos con los que a veces nos hacemos daño ya no tendrán cabida en nuestra mente y nuestra vida habrá tomado un nuevo rumbo: el rumbo que te llevará a ser la persona de éxito y feliz que siempre has deseado ser.

Muchas gracias por esta nota. Creo que muchas veces, nos olvidamos el significado de los festivos que celebramos. Un ejemplo es el Día de Acción de Gracias. Es que nos encontramos en la tradición de comer pavo, pasar tiempo con la familia, etc., pero nos olvidamos que este día es un día en que podemos reflejarnos en las bendiciones que hemos recibido. Yo reconozco que no he dado la gracias a Dios por todo lo que me ha dado, pero ahora, yo sé que es algo que necesito hacer. Necesitamos dar gracias por las cosas que ya tenemos, como la familia, la comida, los amigos, etc., y olvidarnos que hay cosas malas, como el trabajo, la economía, etc. Todos somos una familia, y por eso, debemos ayudarnos.
